Third Lecture in Kadambari Badami Memorial Lecture Series

June 4, 2014

Transparent Chennai would like to invite you to the third in a series of lectures in honor of Kadambari Badami.

Kadambari trained as an urban planner and worked in the US, before returning to India and working with a number of organizations on planning issues, most recently leading Transparent Chennai’s work on walkability. Kadambari was passionate about creating safer streets, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, and for engaging citizens in designing and monitoring their own roads. She passed away in a road accident in her hometown of Bangalore on March 2, 2014.

This lecture series is an attempt to bring greater awareness to the issues that inspired her work.

Our speaker for the lecture is Mr. Sanjay Sridhar, the Regional Director, South Asia and West Asia,  C40, Cities Climate Leadership Group and the Former Director of Urban Development, EMBARQ India. Mr. Sridhar will speak on Walking Transit and Neighbourhood Improvement Plans.

Cities are increasingly car-centric and lack pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. This results in more accidents and reduced safety for the elderly, children and differently-abled, and therefore increasing issues of safety and security of neighbourhoods and the city as a whole. Through several studies and projects, EMBARQ has looked at how city spaces can be reimagined to improve the quality of life in the neighbourhood, with a particular focus pedestrian access and infrastructure. Sanjay will share the experiences and recommendations from EMBARQ’s study projects which aim to enhance safe pedestrian access across neighbourhoods and specifically around upcoming metro stations.
