ROAD SAFETY
Road is a basic infrastructure serving multiple functions. Primarily built for commuting it also supports essential services such as water supply, sewerage and drainage pipe lines, power cables, transformers and other utility boxes. It serves as an important public space used for socialising, livelihood, and shelter and constantly transforms based on the activities during the day.
Road has been subjected to abuse by constant digging and relaying, deteriorating its conditions and increasing the risks for the commuters. In the recent past road safety has been a rising cause of concern in the city, especially with the rising vehicular population and dwindling width of pavements.
Although the state had adopted a road safety policy in April 2007, the number of accidents has far from reduced and pedestrians have emerged as the most victimised of all road users.
Thus, under this layer we intend to focus on the existing pedestrian infrastructure and the arising problems of traffic and road transport. The study focuses on understanding the locations and causes of accidents and the measures that could be adopted to reduce it.
