Can good girls have fun? Book reading and discussion

March 8, 2013

Transparent Chennai and its partner, Prajnya and hosted a book reading and discussion with Sameera Khan and Shilpa Ranade, two of the authors of Why Loiter? The book examines how women access public space in cities and on how they do not have an equal right to that space. It argues that “loitering” could be used as a strategy for women to reclaim public space. The discussion focussed on interrogating the audience’s perceptions of public space and revealed that women had to negotiate these spaces. The audience asked the authors questions on the methodology of the study, access to public spaces in other countries and on how they advocated for loitering.
